Hollywood Elitist Threaten Obama
Posted on: January 20, 2012 at 3:00PM
Former Senator Chris Dodd, now CEO of the Motion Picture Association, has reportedly sent a letter to President Obama threatening to cut off donations from the Hollywood elite if the SOPA bill does not pass and get enacted into law.
Fox News is reporting that Dodd's letter read, "Don't ask me to write a check for you when you think your job is at risk and then don't pay any attention to me when my job is at stake." The letter reportedly went on to say that while the Democrats have historically enjoyed Hollywood's support, it is no guarantee that they will continue to receive such support if SOPA is not enacted into law.
The problem with this type of heavy-handed tactic is that politicians need money to get elected, and are weary to do anything that will jeopardize fundraising capabilities. The flip side of the coin, however, is that politicians also need votes to get elected. If President Obama is as great of a leader as he and his supporters claim to be, then he will lead the Hollywood elite to understand that terminating the civil rights of all Americans to protect the profits of a minority of our society is not good for our nation.
SOPA seems to be shaping up into a major campaign issue this year. Politicians who support it face the backlash of the citizens who will be harmed by it, and those who do not support it are threatened by Hollywood elitist with financial winter.
What do you think? Is it fair for Hollywood to try and turn this election year into a one issue election? Will it work?
